Mr Shakib is a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, a field treating the mouth, jaw, face, or neck. He works closely with our orthodontic staff, supporting patients who require surgical care.
Orthodontics is often straightforward, in the sense that the right braces alone can achieve a patient’s wishes. For others, oral, or jaw realignment (orthognathic) surgery may be valuable.
Mr Shakib’s career began as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1993, followed by a fellowship in dental surgery in 1996. His natural, surgical skills recognised and taken forward through the Royal College of Surgeons.
After studying medicine at the Royal Free Hospital, he was invited to join a prestigious PhD program at UCL. Further bachelor’s degrees followed, in medicine and dentistry. Mr Shakib then becoming a Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Medicine in 2002.
Membership of The Royal College of Surgeons came a few years later, along with a Fellowship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2010. At the top of his profession, Mr Shakib brings life changing treatment to his patients and to medicine.
He offers oversight to the Royal Free’s oral & maxillofacial department, along with acting as honorary senior lecturer. The mentorship he offers to up and coming surgeons is welcomed, as is his well targeted research.
This includes work and widely published papers on regenerative nanotechnology in oral & maxillofacial surgery, molecular modeling of serotonin receptors, stem cell treatment for squamous cell carcinoma in the head, or neck.
Areas which look to the future of medicine and advanced treatment for patients. The latter a key element, for a surgeon who believes in building good relationships with the people he treats.
As much as supporting his profession counts for Mr Shakib, he views medicine as a human science. The number of people he has cared for is substantial, yet he remembers each one as a unique case.
A philosophy which underpins our work at Harley Street Orthodontics and offers fine results. Whether clearing a recalcitrant tooth, or rebuilding an entire jaw due to trauma, or a quirk of nature, Mr Shakib’s skills add much to our orthodontic patients progress.
